GoAhead Bexleyheath Bus Garage

Overview of Works

Go-Ahead London serves the UK capital, currently providing 24% of all London bus services on behalf of Transport for London.

Go-Ahead first started operating services in London in 1994. With 16 garages across the capital, they also operate 43% of TFL's zero emission bus fleet.

As well as being the largest London bus operator, they are at the forefront of new technologies.

Sinewave were appointed to carry out a multi-phase project on the Bexley Heath Bus Depot providing 2 MVA worth of power including the first pantograph we know of in Europe that can charge both single and double decker buses.

Contestable works on behalf of Abellio included:

Design and installation of 2 MVA connection

600m off route connection

Design and installation of the EV chargers to power up the bus depot including a 350 Kw pantograph and 18x 80kV chargers

Acted as principle contractor managing the construction, health and safety and coordination through the construction phase

Design of both the EV network under BS7671 and design of the DNO network under G81 standards

G55 harmonics

Project Management & Delivery

The project was split into two phases; initial phase, installation and excavation of all cabling, sub-stations, LV infrastructure and EV charging across a live operational bus depot, resulting in temporary reinstatement and phased working across the site with no disruption to bus services.

Phase 2 was the off site connection of the 11kV cables which was located 600m away along a busy city transport route. Works were planned and co-ordinated with TFL and Bexley council to ensure minimum disruption to the surrounding areas.

Sinewave delivered the full turnkey solution from a 600m off site run to a packaged 2MVA substation, overnight chargers and of course the pantograph.

Sinewave were given a challenging brief of designing and delivering the grid connection and on site EV charging infrastructure while keeping the garage fully operational. This included Europe’s first pantograph capable of charging single and double decker buses. Throughout the project Sinewave overcame challenges and delivered one of the toughest off site grid connections we’ve seen. We’re delighted with the results.

Key Challenges

  • Working across multiple phases whilst maintaining a fully operational depot.

  • Installing and energising Europe’s first pantograph that charges single and double decker bus’s

  • Found contaminated ground on site from previous diesel spillage

  • Multiple stakeholders including the bus operator, Mayor of London, and TfL.
